Puzzle 47: The Pillars of Endurance

Puzzle Walkthrough

We begin with the relative times and heights. The nine-foot pillar lasted longer than the eight-foot pillar but not as long as the eleven-foot pillar, and the contestant who lasted thirty minutes was on the nine-foot pillar. The seven-foot pillar lasted eighteen minutes. These fix two time–height pairs immediately and set the nine-foot time between the eight-foot and eleven-foot times. The Star pillar was one foot shorter than the Wave pillar, and the Flame pillar stood two feet taller than the Leaf pillar. Since the contestant who fell from the tallest pillar did so because of the Wind, the eleven-foot height is tied to Wind. The Moon pillar was not the tallest, its fall was due to Fatigue, and its endurance time was not twenty-three minutes.

Next connect the symbol chains with times and causes. The Wave pillar’s time was five minutes longer than the Rain faller’s time, and the ten-foot pillar lasted longer than the Star pillar. Since the eleven-foot pillar is Wind, Rain must be on a shorter pillar. Harper’s pillar was two feet shorter than Finn’s and Harper fell to Rain; this nails a two-foot gap between their heights while also pinning Rain on Harper’s height. Jane’s pillar was taller than Harper’s and Jane did not stand on the Leaf pillar, while Finn lasted longer than Mina but not as long as Jane. There is also a one-foot cause chain: the contestant who Got Distracted stood one foot taller than the Rain faller.

Use the fixed time–height anchors to place people. The seven-foot pillar is eighteen minutes. If Harper is Rain, the Wave pillar must be five minutes longer than Harper’s time. The only time five minutes above eighteen is twenty-three, so Harper must be the seven-foot pillar at eighteen minutes with Rain, and Wave must be twenty-three minutes on the next height up, eight feet. The cause chain then forces the Got Distracted fall one foot taller than Rain, so the eight-foot Wave pillar must be Got Distracted. With Wave at eight feet, the Star pillar is one foot shorter at seven feet, which matches Harper’s height; therefore Harper’s symbol is Star. The nine-foot pillar is already fixed at thirty minutes and must sit between the eight-foot and eleven-foot times, which works since Wave is twenty-three and the tallest will exceed thirty.

Now resolve the remaining heights and symbols. The Flame pillar stands two feet taller than the Leaf pillar. With nine feet and seven feet already used, the remaining pair that is two feet apart is Leaf at nine feet and Flame at eleven feet. That sets Leaf at nine feet and Flame at eleven feet. The eleven-foot tallest pillar is Wind by rule, so the Flame pillar is Wind. Since the ten-foot pillar must last longer than the Star pillar, and Star is Harper at eighteen minutes, the ten-foot time must be above eighteen. The Moon pillar is neither tallest nor twenty-three minutes and its cause is Fatigue, so Moon cannot be the eight-foot twenty-three-minute slot; it will be the other remaining height, ten feet, with a time distinct from twenty-three.

Fit contestants to these placements using the personal comparisons. Finn lasted longer than Mina but not as long as Jane, and Jane’s height is taller than Harper’s while not being Leaf. Harper is already seven feet; Leaf is nine feet, so Jane cannot be Leaf and must be Flame at eleven feet. That gives Jane the eleven-foot Flame pillar with Wind and a time longer than thirty minutes, leaving the thirty-minute nine-foot Leaf pillar for someone else. Since Moon is Fatigue and Moon is the ten-foot pillar, and Mina’s fall was Fatigue and her pillar was shorter than Jane’s, Mina must be Moon at ten feet.

This gives Mina a mid-range time higher than eighteen but lower than Jane. The remaining open heights are nine and eight for Finn and Suri. Finn must be between Mina and Jane in time; Mina at ten feet must exceed Harper’s eighteen, and Jane at eleven feet is the longest, so Finn fits naturally at nine feet for thirty minutes, leaving Suri at eight feet for twenty-three minutes. That assignment also satisfies Harper two feet shorter than Finn.

Finally assign causes consistently: we already have Wind on eleven feet for Jane, Rain on Harper, Got Distracted one foot taller than Rain which we placed on the eight-foot Wave for Suri, and Moon’s cause Fatigue on Mina at ten feet. That leaves Lost Balance as the remaining cause, which fits Finn on the nine-foot Leaf pillar. All time comparisons now align: Wave at twenty-three is five minutes longer than Rain at eighteen, the ten-foot pillar lasts longer than the Star pillar, and the nine-foot thirty minutes is longer than eight-foot twenty-three but shorter than eleven-foot thirty-four.

Everything checks: Jane is taller than Harper and not Leaf, Finn’s time is between Mina’s and Jane’s, Moon is not tallest and is Fatigue, Flame’s time exceeds Leaf’s, and all numeric relations match the fixed pairs for seven feet with eighteen minutes and nine feet with thirty minutes.
